An efficient handrail shop starts with a usable blank—not just a piece of tube cut roughly to length. A Pedrazzoli Super Brown cold saw can establish consistent lengths, square reference ends and clean miter faces while reducing the cleanup associated with rough cutoff methods. For small fabrication shops, job shops and repeat-production work, choosing the right saw is an important first step toward reducing preparation labor.
This guide focuses on the Super Brown 350/60 MRM manual cold saw and Super Brown 350/60 SA semi-automatic cold saw. It also explains where an Ercolina bender and EN100 notcher fit into a practical handrail workflow.
A toothed cold-saw blade removes metal as chips rather than grinding through it with an abrasive wheel. With suitable blade selection, speed, feed, coolant and workholding, a Super Brown can produce a smooth cut with minimal burr and a square end at the straight-cut setting. A good result may be described as a near-machined or “mill-quality” finish, but that is not a guaranteed surface-finish or squareness tolerance.
An abrasive chop saw can leave heavier internal or external burrs, rough edges and heat discoloration, depending on the cutting conditions. The real comparison is total time per acceptable blank: measuring, clamping, cutting, deburring, cleaning and checking. A fast cutoff is not necessarily economical if every piece needs extensive hand finishing.
Inspect every blank and deburr as needed. Cold sawing does not guarantee burr-free edges, and cut pieces or chips may still be hot or sharp. Follow the saw’s guarding, unloading and handling instructions.
A saw can prepare straight members for welded frames, railings and stairway connections that use miters instead of bends. Both Super Brown models discussed here list 45-degree miter capability. Confirm the cutting direction, available angles and capacity at the actual angle using the specific model’s chart.
Two matching 45-degree miters can form a conventional 90-degree corner. A stair rail meeting a post or another member may require a different angle based on the stair pitch and joint design. Follow the drawing rather than assuming every stairway cut is 45 degrees. Check mating faces on a sample assembly and retain the specified weld gap or edge preparation.
A flat miter and a saddle notch are different features: the saw produces the angled cut face; a tube notcher shapes an end to follow a round mating surface. Do not assume miter capability means compound-angle or weld-bevel capability.
The MRM manual model uses a manually operated head and quick-lock manual vise. Consider it when your shop handles changing lengths, mixed jobs and smaller batches, and the operator needs straightforward control of the cutting cycle.
Its published features include variable blade speed, a locking swivel head, a coolant system and a stock stop with micrometer adjustment. The operator’s feed technique, blade condition and clamping remain important to cut consistency. Ask for a quotation that identifies the supplied electrical configuration, blade and material-support equipment.
The SA semi-automatic model adds adjustable pneumatic head downfeed and return, together with a pneumatic vise. It is worth evaluating when repeated cutting cycles make powered movement and controlled clamping useful.
The model information describes anti-burr workholding that supports the part during the cut. Confirm the supplied arrangement and demonstrate the result on your stock; it helps minimize burring rather than guaranteeing its elimination. Variable blade speed and appropriate coolant support matching the process to the material.
Semi-automatic cutting is not automatically automatic length feeding. An optional feeding system may make sense for repeat quantities, but confirm it separately in the quotation. Include compressed-air requirements, electrical service and loading/unloading time in the comparison.
Pair the Ercolina EN100 notcher with an Ercolina Top Bender or Super Bender and a Pedrazzoli Super Brown cold saw for a practical, cost-efficient cutting, bending and notching setup. Each machine handles a dedicated operation, helping small shops, job shops and mid-volume fabricators reduce hand preparation and repeated fit-up work without starting with a full CNC profiling system.
Choose the Top Bender or Super Bender to suit your parts—you do not need both to build this three-machine combination. Match the saw, bender, tooling and notcher to your materials, dimensions, bend radii, joint designs and production needs. For suitable applications, this can be an excellent balance of investment, ease of use and output.
A Super Brown saw is the starting point for a coordinated preparation system. For suitable handrail applications, CML USA can combine it with:
Cut. Bend. Notch. Fit. The order may change with the part: preserve necessary clamping lengths and confirm access before deciding whether to notch before or after bending. A clean cope can reduce trial fitting and corrective grinding, but weld preparation and finishing still follow the drawing and welding procedure.
These three machines cover the core preparation operations for many handrail jobs—not every step needed to deliver an installed railing. Welding fixtures, welding equipment, finishing, inspection and code-compliant installation remain separate requirements.
When the work goes beyond straightforward cutoff and end notches, consider the Ercolina ErcoCut EC220PHT 75M CNC plasma tube and profile cutter, commonly referred to as the ErcoCut 220. CML USA supplies and supports Ercolina cutting equipment alongside Pedrazzoli saws.
The ErcoCut coordinates CNC positioning and plasma cutting for complex copes, saddles, notches, hole patterns, slots and cutoffs in suitable conductive materials. Programmed cuts and saved jobs can reduce repeated manual layout and separate operations when a part has multiple features. Its published model information also lists automatic bevel cutting, subject to the supplied configuration and material limits.
Use the Super Brown for clean, straightforward blanks and miters; consider the EN100 for dedicated end notching within its capabilities; evaluate ErcoCut CNC plasma when part complexity, repeated feature patterns or bevel preparation justify programming and a larger investment. The plasma machine is not automatically the best choice for every high-finish part: assess edge quality, heat effects, dross removal, small-feature requirements and the welding specification on a sample cut.
Send CML USA a drawing or supported CAD file, material grade, wall thickness, stock dimensions and production quantities for a demonstration. Confirm software, workholding, extraction, utilities, consumables and first-piece approval time as part of the comparison.
If the part will be mandrel bent, internal cutoff burrs and loose chips deserve particular attention. A raised edge can obstruct mandrel insertion or break loose and score the tooling or bore. Remove internal and external burrs, clear debris and inspect the tube before loading. A clean cutoff does not correct an obstructive weld seam, incorrect mandrel clearance or unsuitable lubrication.
See our cold saw advantages and tube preparation guide for additional preparation checks.
For a buying decision, ask for sample cuts using your material and record the total time to produce accepted blanks. Compare:
A dedicated cold saw can reduce preparation labor and support higher output when cutoff and cleanup are bottlenecks. The result depends on the application; no fixed production increase or payback period applies to every shop.

This companion PDF is Ercolina’s EN100-focused guide, supplied by CML USA. It expands on roller changes, coping, fit-up and the saw–bender–notcher combination. The Pedrazzoli article you are reading remains the starting point for choosing the cold saw. You can also read the companion guide on Ercolina’s website.
Send us your material, dimensions and daily cutting quantity for a Super Brown recommendation. Include alloy, actual outside diameter, wall thickness, cut lengths, miter angles, tolerances and available shop power. For semi-automatic equipment, include your compressed-air supply. Confirm capacity at the actual cut angle; nominal pipe size and tube outside diameter are not interchangeable measurements.
Request a handrail cold-saw application review or compare Pedrazzoli circular cold saws. Tell CML USA whether your next operation is mitered assembly, bending or end notching so the recommendation addresses the complete job.
